TIMELINE OF OUR HISTORY
Bumgarner Oil was founded by brothers Glenn Bumgarner and Cletus (Tommy) Bumgarner. Glenn had recently returned from serving overseas in the Army when his brother approached him about going into the oil business.
The first transport truck was purchased and driven by their brother, Gwen, who dedicated over 30 years and millions of miles to Bumgarner Oil, becoming a cornerstone of the company’s legacy.
Tommy retired, selling his share to Glenn. Glenn’s son, David, came on board, starting as a driver and later leading the expansion into convenience stores and a heating and air company. It was a new era of growth for the family business.
The company made its first oil acquisition and went on to acquire 10 oil companies, each expansion allowing the company to reach more customers while maintaining its commitment to delivering top-quality fueling services throughout the region.
Bumgarner Oil opened its first Cubbard Express, transitioning from a full-service station to a modern gas station, marking the start of their journey in the convenience store industry.
B&B Transport was officially formed as its own division, expanding the fleet. That same year, the company launched Climate Control Systems, stepping into the heating and air business.
By the year 2000, Cubbard Express had grown to four convenience stores over a span of 10 years.
The third generation of Bumgarners, Zachary, joined the family business after graduating from UNC Charlotte. Starting first as a short truck driver, then moving into a sales role, Zachary focused on expanding the Wholesale division while also laying the groundwork for the company’s future expansion into the propane industry.
The first Fallen Heroes Truck was unveiled. This wrapped tanker was revealed to the family of Hickory Native, Marine Gunnery Sgt. Chris Eckard, who was killed in an explosion in Afghanistan in Feb. 2010 during his fifth deployment. Learn more about our collaboration with the Fallen Heroes Ministry here.
In 2019, Bumgarner Oil became Little Caesars Franchisees and put a Little Caesars Express inside of Cubbard Express #12. This was the true start of the food division that continues to expand with the need for quality hot food options within convenience stores.
After years of service, the company sold its heating and air division, Climate Control Systems, as part of its evolving focus on core operations.
Bumgarner Propane launched. With decades worth of residential fuel delivery, expanding into the propane industry was a natural progression. Their goal was to fill a gap in the market for a local, customer-first provider.
Another Bumgarner joins the family business. Hannah Bumgarner Teague, granddaughter of Glenn and daughter of David, came on board in 2023 as the Marketing Director.
Founder and Owner, Glenn Bumgarner, passed away at the age of 91. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, whose legacy extends far beyond his business. A man of deep faith and integrity, Glenn was not only a respected businessman but also a man of God, whose values shaped Bumgarner Oil and left an enduring impact on both the company and the community.
